Buying Lotus

Best time to order and to plant Lotuses

Lotus can be planted only during a short period in spring. What is planted are the rhizomes, the underground shoots of the plant. In our region (Southern Bavaria, 500 m above sea level) planting season usualy starts in early April and ends in early June. Dormant rhizomes and rhizomes that have just begun to sprout can be shipped without problems, but soon the plants become too big and too breakable to ship them by mail. Weather conditions are different every spring and so is the beginning of the planting season. Depending on the actual wheater conditions the planting season can start up to ten days sooner or later. After the shipping period for Lotus is over we do keep a small assortment of planted Lotuses in our nursery. They are planted into 60 liter barrels and since they are too big for shipment they are available only for pickup in the nursery.

The Lotuses we sell are no imported rhizomes. Without any exception they are propagated here in the nursery. Since 1996 we cultivate Lotuses and since that time we have assembled a collection of about 150 varieties – probably one of the larges collections in Europe. All varieties were selected for robustness and do well in our climate. We also hybridized a few new varieties.

We regret that it is impossible to propagate all varieties every year in large quantities. Every year in late winter we put online in our shop the varieties that are available in larger quantities. After we devided our Lotuses in late March we put online the rarer varieties. At that time we send out our newsletter to the subscribers to inform them that Lotus can be ordered now. As far as our experience goes rare varieties do sell out quickly.  If you want to subscribe to our newsletter you can do it on top of this page on the right side.
