If you grew up in the countryside you will know the Greater Celandine as a typical plant of neglected spots. When the plant is damaged, an orange sap drips from the wound. When we were children, we used to drop the sap onto our fingernails. That looked liked grandfathers smoker fingers and was perfect to shock parents. Today I know that the sap can cause irritations of the skin and shouldn`t be used this way. In the past the plant was kept in rural gardens because of the sap, since it was used against warts. Today the plant is rarer than before. Also in the countryside they tidy up neglected spots, it isn`t used anymore for medical purposes and for the garden it simply isn`t beautiful enough. So this double variety comes right at hand. Its yellow flowers are very double and really nice to look at and it certainly deserves a place in the garden. It is also a plant of first choice for `difficult` spots in dry shade, where it will thrive like few other plants. `Chelidonium` means `Swallow Flower`, for its first flowers appear when the swallows return and it stops flowering when the swallow go back to Africa.
