Asclepias purpurascens [L.] - Purple Milkweed

Of all the American Milkweeds this is the one that behaves best, that is to say it has just a little tendency to spread. It plays an important role in nature being the main forage plant of the Monarch butterfly. This butterfly doesn`t occur in Europe, but we got many other butterflies, bees, bumblebees and hoverflies that will gratefully take the nectar of the Purple Milkweed. The plant is a true magnet to butterflies and that is the reason why it is now more widely used in gardens. Since it grows naturally in wetland it needs a lot of moisture or a place at the margin of the pond.
