This Columbine came only recently to cultivation in Europe. It is named after the place where it was discovered, the village of Yabe on Kyushu, Japan. Like the rest of Japan also Kyushu is almost completely covered by mountains. Down on the foothills they grow tea plants and further up the mountains the Yabe-Columbine dwells in light shadow of forest margins. It resembles our native columbine, but the flowers bear longer spurs that provide a very fancy appearance.
