Here is a plant for all those who dislike botanical names. It got just one common name in English, and this name is taken from Maori: Purei. Much easier to remember than Carex secta - isn`t it? As the name indicates Purei comes from New Zealand. There it grows in swamps of the southern island and can be found almost everywhere. So why do we think you have a need for a sedge from the other side of the world? Simply because it is different to all other sedges in cultivation. This plant grows up high on its own debris (like ancient cities in the orient did). Around this sedge many things find a hold: old and worn off roots, leaves and everything the wind carries hither. The new roots simply grow on top of this little compost heap. In the course of time a little tower is formed (up to one meter high) and on top of it the sedge is growing. It looks a bit like a palm tree, or a grass tree. Or - if you really are imagineous - like a tree fern. In any case it looks nice and very exotic. We offer plants that are one year old and have spent the first winter with us in an unheated poly tunnel with temperatures as low as -15° C. Best time for planting is spring.
