By many people pondweeds are called `Algae`. The aren`t algae, not all! The are flowering plants, very important for purifying the water and as a source of oxygene. They even are antagonist of algae. Under water they form long stems that are densely covered with curly leaves. The leaves feel somewhat hard for they are often covered with limescale - a result of the metabolism of the plant (it takes up disolved lime from the water and fixes it as insoluble limescale on its leaves. Curly Pondweed can remarkably change a high pH level to a neutral one). Above waterlevel it produces modest florets in midsummer. The plant is very vigorous and if the water is high in nutrients it will be necessary to thin out the plants until a lower level is reached. In autumn the plant disolves and hibernates as tiny bud on the ground of the pond from where it reappears the following May.
