The Sweetflag came from Southeast Asia as a medical plant. It is supposed that it was in the 16th century when it was cultivated for the first time in Europe in Prague. From there it has spread all over the continent and is now regarded as a nativ plant (as a `neophyt` to express it correctly). It is a very good plant for the pond, although it does rarely bloom in our climate and never sets seed here. Its leaves are similar to those of the yellow flag, except for its undulated margins. Something really special is the fragrance of this plant. Cut a leaf in piece and take a deep breath - there is nothing this fragrance can be compared with. The rhizome of the plant was once used in medicine, and it was also used to prepare liquors and bitters. This is a historic use, for it is now clear that the plant contains carcinogenes.
