Nymphaea `Almost Black` - Hardy Waterlily

(Perry D. Slocum 1994) In the 80ies and 90ies of the 20th century Perry D. Slocum and Kirk Strawn grimly competed in hybridizing new waterlilies. Both introduced a lot of new varieties and they tried to outplay or at least copy the new varieties of the competitor. One of the hard-fought goals was the introduction of a `black` waterlily. Of course none of them was able to create a truely black waterlily, but at least some astonishingly dark red varieties were introduced. `Almost Black` is one of them. The inner petals are really very, very dark, to the outside the petals are brighter but still definitely dark red. Slocum claimed that in the ancestory of this variety were two tropical waterlilies, what was considered impossible at that time. Since recently we know that such crosses are indeed possible. If Slocum is right, the genes of those tropicals had no influence at all on the hardiness of `Almost Black`.
