Ginger that is used in the kitchen is a difficult to keep plant outside the tropics. Fortunately it got a number of relatives that are far less demanding. One of them is the Butterfly-Ginger. It is a perfect tub plant, satisfied with a sunny position on the patio. If given ample food you can expect to see its butterfly-like white fragrant flowers from late summer on. Adult plants in our nursery are about one meter high, in their native home they reach thrice this size. We winterize our plants cold in the unheated greenhouse. It is said that the plants survive outside if given enough shelter by a thick layer of leaves - we haven`t tried it out, yet.
