There are several spider lilies, but just a few of them are used in Europe as not hardy summer flowers for bedding. Few gardeners know that there are some spider lilies that prefer wet soil or even shallow water. The swamp spider lily (how surprising ... is one of them. It is native to Central America and the south of the USA, where it blooms in early summer. In our nursery the plants produce two flushs of flowers each year. The first in late May and the second at the end of summer.
We keep this variety over winter in an unheated greenhouse (with temperatures as low as -15°C), but it is also possible to keep it on a warm window sill during winter. Winterizing out of doors we haven`t tried yet. The variety we keep comes from Florida and is correctly name Hymenocallis latifolia var. keyensis.
