A plant to baffle your friends with. Just ask them`: `what is that one?`, and most likely they will answer: `it`s a four-leaved clover. But did you place it in the water?`. That`s the moment you waited for, for now you reply: `it`s no clover at all, it`s a fern, and it`s in the water because it belongs there`. Waterclover is indeed a fern, but won`t be able to tell that if you don`t know. Size and appearance are absolutely that of a four-leaved clover (it even folds up its leaves during the night like clover does), but in dwells in shallow water and on wet soil. It loves warmth and sun, so it grows only in the mildest regions of Central Europe. In Germany it became extinct in the late 1960ies - despite it was (and is) a protected species. This shows it is useless to protect species while it is legal to destroy their habitats.
