Another name of this plant is Water-Aloe which describes its appearance perfectly. It really looks like an aloe that has fallen into the water, when it floats on the surface. It spreads by producing young plants on runners. In autumn it sinks on the ground of the pond and emerges again the next spring - but surrounded with a lot of children. In the past there were ponds and small lakes that were completely covered with water-soldier.
