In most warmer countries of the world this plant is banned for it propagates in warm water with unbelievable speed and vigour and forms a thick carpet on the surface of lakes and slow running rivers. The carpet can become so thick that all other plant below it die because of the lack of sunlight. Sometime even ships are stuck in those carpets. In Central Europe however it is necessary to pamper this plant if you want it to produce its lovely azure flowers in midsummer. Only in very warm summers it will bloom here, but its globular floating bodies are very decorative even without flowers. Not at all hardy and available from mid May on.
