The Slender Sedge is a typical plant of wet meadows. Those meadows were once used to harvest litter hay from them, but modern agriculture has no more need of litter hay. So most wet meadows were meliorated and are gone. Gone with them is their special fauna. The Slender Sedge however found recently new employment in plant filters and reed beds. Its roots filter huge amounts of nutrients from the water and help to clean it this way. The plant flowers in summer with long brownish spikes.
