This variety of garlic is at home in moist and wet meadows along the great streams Rhine, Elbe and Danube. Once there was a huge population of mouse garlic along the banks of river Danube near the small town of Donauwörth. This population was the foundation of a little industry. The meadows accommodation the mouse garlic were used as cow paddocks and the cow of course also ate the garlic. Obviously they like it very much, for they ate it in such amounts that their milk did taste of garlic. A special cheese was prepared from this milk (`Schwaig Cheese`) and sold all over Europe. Until recently this cheese was nothing but a faint memory, but since 2003 cows are again grazing the garlic meadows and the cheese is again prepared and sold as a delicacy. You need not go the deviation via cow, you can eat the garlic directly as a herb. In the garden it needs no moist meadow, it will grow in a well watered bed. It is by the way not only a herb, it is also a very attrative littel flower, for in summer it bears light violet flowers on slender stalks.
