There got to be some Columbines in every self-respecting cottage garden. But - as one my botany teachers did put it - 'there is a horticultural problem with Columbines. Other genera tend to hybridize. What Columbines do in this respect can only be described as promiscuity.' If you grow Columbines for seed it is crucial that the plants get no chance to hybridize. Unfortunately we do not have the space to keep our Columbines several hundred meters separated from each other. So we propagate them only by devision and don't allow them to go to seed. Of course we never are able to cut all plants before they go to seed and so we have every year a nice crop of hybrid Columbine seed. We can't tell how the plants will look like that grow from this seed. Their flower my be single or double, with spurs or without, big or small and the flowers may be anything from white to pink and purple to blue. There may be even some yellow, red or orange flowers appear. Its seedling plants from those seeds what we offer here. So it is the big lucky bag. If you allow those plants to go to seed you will receive again different plants because of their complexe ancestry.
