Eupatorium cannabinum [L.] - Hemp Agrymony

Those who were temptated by the word `hemp` to take a closer look will be disapointed: this plant isn`t related to hemp and also the substances it contains have nothing in common with those of hemp. Its only the shape of the foliage that shows a slight resemblance between the two plants. It is the only member of the genus Eupatorium that is native to Europe, all others are native to Northern America. The Hemp Agrymony grows in alluvial forests and along rivers, at times it grows on wet spots that are periodically flooded. At the best places it grows as high as 3 meters. In the garden it remains much smaller, often it barely exceeds one meter height. It is in bloom from mid summer to autumn and it is an important food resource for a rare butterfly, the Jersey Tiger. Recently Hemp Agrymony became fashionable among herbalists. Better be carefull - there is a good reason why pharmaceuticals made of Hemp Agrymony are available only in pharmacies.
