The Higher Violett finds the western end of its distribution in Germany. It occurs only along the greater rivers and is completely missing in the northwest. Also in the other parts of Germany it is very rare and it is on the list of endangered species. It depends on soils that are often disturbed and open and won`t stand the competition of stronger plants. Before the rivers were controlled, there were floodings almost every year and much of the area was remodeled by the forces of the water. This must have been heaven for the higher violett. Today it has a hard time to find suitable places to live. It is of easy care at your pond however, since we regularily disturb the soil there when weeding. It will also grow in a border, where it often does selfseed but never becomes a nuissance. |
