A hundred years ago bird´s-eye primroses were very common in the alpine foothills of Bavaria. My father told me that in his childhood the meadows around our village were turned pink in spring by the millions of primroses that grew there. They are all gone. Our rivers are controled and so there are no more regular floodings in early summer. Bird`s-eye primrose can`t stand stronger neighbours. In meadows rich in nutrients they are simply grown out by gras and they die. In the garden it doesn`t take much effort to create a suitable spot for them. All you need is moist soil, poor in nutrients and rich in lime - and most important: no larger plants as neighbours.
