This Iris is a close relative of our native Blue Flag. It comes from the western USA, where it grows in moist meadow and along streams. It is rarely used in gardens. In Europe it is hardly known, and in the USA it is considered a weed of pastures. The plant tastes bitter and cattle will not eat it. As a result it is usualy the only plant in pastures that can go to seed and the more cows you keep, the more Irises you will get. At your domestic pond cows are probably rare and so this Iris won`t cause trouble in your garden. In the contrary it will be an attractive enrichment (unless you have the habit to chew on your ornamental plants).
