Not named after the big bad wolf, but after a certain Egbert Wolf, who was director of the institute of forestry at Saint Petersburg during the times of the last Russian czar. At that time trees and shrubs from all over Russia were gathered and brought to the institute. It must have been a huge number of plants and to work through them took very long. Wolf`s Lilac had been at least 15 years at the institute until finaly a botanist examined it closely and realized it was a new species. Unfortunatelly all documents concerning this plant were lost and so nobody knew where it came from. It took another seven years until the plant was found again in Korea. Today we know that it is at home in the extreme east of Russia and along the Chinese-Russian border. It is a large shrub (or a small tree) that blooms in June. Its flowers are typical lilac flowers, the colour varies from pale lilac to light purple. The scent is very strong and pleasant. Wolf`s Lilac allows to extemd the blooming period of lilac for two more weeks.
