This onion bears a lot of common names. It develops small bulbs instead of flowers. Each bulb sprouts when still attached to the original plant and produces a stalk that bears small bulbs which sprout when still attached to the original plant and produces a stalk that bears ...  and so on, and so on. The result is a rather bizarre plant. The little bulbs are of course edible and they can be harvested without any effort. Since they are so small, they are perfect for pickling.
