This subspecies of the European Buck`s Beard comes from far east. It looks very much like the European one, expect for its pure white flowers and its somewhat larger size.
Many perennials that are used as ground covers do have the disadvantage to dye back in winter completely and leave a naked spot on the ground. That`s a pity for it is winter when we need as much green in the garden as possible. Luckly Bishop`s Head is an exception, for it keeps its foliage during winter and drops it after the new foliage has emerged. If you want to be really ungratefull to this service of the plant, you just need to remove the foliage right before the new leaves appear. The plant will then develope first flowers and afterwards new leaves. It means more labour for the plant but we can see its flowers that otherwise are often hidden under the old leaves.
`Orangekönigin` (= `orange queen´) is an older variety that was selected by Ernst Pagels. It is a deciduous variety and can be forced to produce an extra prolific bloom by sharp cutting in early spring.

There is quite a lot of things you can use hop for. It is a vine and you use it to cover walls, fences, sheds and the like. Hop will stand deep shade, so you can use it on the north side of buildings. Hops (the flowers) look really nice, there are good for decoration in autumn. Hop is edible, in spring you can harvest a few of the sprouts - its the most expensive vegetable in the world. Most important of all: there is no good bear without hop.
This a both beautiful and special forest dweller from Japan. It forms large clumps and in autumn it bears pale yellow nutant flowers. The flowers look like a cross of a shuttlecock with a lily. The late blooming time makes the wax bell a treasure for every garden.
There are exactly two cases when to use the Yellow Archangel in the garden: if you need a plant with green-silvery foliage for a hanging basket or a flower box, or if you need a ground cover for a space where nothing else is able to grow. It will fullfill both duties excently. But woe to him who plants into a sunny border that is well fertilized! The Yellow Archangel will conquer the whole border in the twinkle of an eye!
This Chinese plant is extraordinary perennial for light and half shade. Its foliage is palmate and carries a light bronce overtone. In spring short panicles of creame white flowers do appear. Despite its name this plant is not restricted to the pyrenees but it occurs in all mountain ranges from northern Spain to Liguria. It is a rare plant throughout this region. It grows short, reaching a maximum of 20 cms. Typically it grows on shady rocks, the leaves pressed down to the rock. The blue flowers appear in June and July. In the garden it needs a special spot, for example on rocks near an artifical waterfall.
There is a lot of rumour around this plant on German internet sites. Its German name resembles that of a famous liqueur, and so the myth tells that the plant is shut away by the liqueur-mafia. Alas it isn`t true. There once was sort of a liqueur-mafia consisting of my great-aunt Creszenzia ...
Probably the most beautiful of all comfreys, but no plant that can be used in a mixed border for it is a very vigorous grower. It needs a space for itself, and since it is happy with light and deep shadow, it is not difficult to find such a space. As a reward for the extra space its ...
