The lotuses we offer are not imported from southern China or Singapore. Without exception they are grown here in the harsh climate of southern Bavaria, where our nursery is located 500 m above sea level. Our collection of lotuses contains about 120 varieties. With such a large collection it is impossible to offer every variety every year in large numbers. Which varieties are available in which numbers is decided every year in late March when we devide our stock plants. At this time we inform the subscribers of our newsletter that lotuses can be ordered and we activate the available varieties here in our online shop. Until the end of March it is possible to view the varieties in the shop, but ordering is possible from late March on only.
There are just two possibilities with this lotus: you either love it or you hate it. It was found at Yuquan Temple in Dangyang, where it is said to have been kept for centuries. Reportedly it was considered the most beautiful lotus in ancient China. Its flower is a socalled `monstrous flower`. Due to a mutation the flower does not sprout one single centre like other flowers, but it got three or four centers (there were flowers reported with as much as twelf centers!). Around every center a complete double flower develops, but all flowers come from the same bud. The result is a gigantic flower that is extremly double. It can consist of more than 2000 petals. The flowers reach usualy 25 cms diameter but they can grow bigger. Flowering season beginns in late July. Producing such huge flowers is hard work, so you can`t expect more than 4 - 6 flowers in one season. The flower stalks are up to 1.5 m high and need support. This lotus needs time to develope. The flowers of the first year are often disappointing. from 60,00 EUR

This one translates `Rain Moon` in English. Rain moon is the sixth month of the old Japanese calendar, it is the beginning of the rain period. While we use to tell ghost stories in winter, the Japanese do so during the rain period in summer. The double white flower of this lotus variety really looks like a pale full moon.

We did grow this lotus more than ten years ago, but we lost the stock plant when we relocated our nursery. Only in 2011 we were able to get again rhizomes of this rare variety from our Japanese friend. Its name means simply `white lotus of Kurotani`. Well, it isn`t that white, there are clear hues of yellow to be found in the flowers. The flowers are very double and in rainy periods it is necessary to stake them. By the way: in its home Kurotani there is one of the oldest papermills of Japan. Wonderfull handmade paper is produced there and even cloths made of paper.

When we were looking for a name for our `Rubin vom Mindeltal` we asked the locals to propose names. One proposal was `Julchen` (=`little Juliette´), a name that we liked but it didn`t match with the lotus in question. `Julchen` sounds like chubby cheaks. The following year we had another new hybrid to name and this time it fitted. The flowers were round and healthy. Mrs. Vogler who had proposed the name was very happy when she learned that her name was finaly given to a lotus.

We received this one some years ago by Craig Presnell from Florida. We do not know where it really originates nor if the name is correct, for it doesn`t show up in any list of lotus varieties. Perhaps it is a Chinese lotus that found its way to the USA via Japan. Its flowers are semi-double, pink with darker edges.
