The English version of our internet site is still under construction. We hope to provide all tabulated information in English until mid March 2010. The plant descriptions will be translated bit by bit afterwards.
This one was created by Kirk Strawn in 1997. It was always a rare variety and it becomes now really hard to find nurseries that still grow it. Propably is appears as `just another pink waterlily´ to the first glimpse. That who takes time to observe it for longer will soon find out that it is an unusual variety. This waterlily keeps on changing. Everything changes: the colour, the position of the flowers, even the foliage changes. It depends on the time of year and the age of the plant. The first flowers in spring are pale pink and float on the water. In summer the colour is deeper and mixed with peach and cream. The flowers now stand above the water surface like tropical lilies do. Autumn brings a firework on the foliage, for it changes to colours almost like the ones of the leaves on the trees.

Sometimes plants don`t become popular despite having the best characteristics one could ask for. Such a plant is `Martha`. This variety by Kirk Strawn was created back in 1993. To the day it remained extremly rare, there is even danger that it will be lost to cultivation if not soon some nurseries start to propagate it. By not stretch of the imagination we could tell the reason for this fact. This waterlily is a beauty, it produces perfect flowers even when it is not yet mature, and it becomes more beautifull year by year.

This is a cross of Nymphaea mexicana and Nymphaea odorata, and that kind of cross appears almost everywhere where these two species grow together. So they do in Lake Okeechobee in Florida. Walter Pagels and Paul Stetson found the plant there when they were looking for interesting crosses in 1999. They gave it to Florida Aquatic Nurseries where it was named and propagated. It is a large plant, especialy the flowers are huge. They show a pale yellow and are held above the water. 2001 the variety was awarded best new waterlily.

As far as we this is the only waterlily of Austrian origin. It was created in 1922 by Mr. Buggele who worked for the park and gardens department of Linz. It was planted in a pond at Pöstlingberg, a quarter of Linz. From there it spread to the whole world. Untill recently it had disappeared from Linz, but now a pond was created there to keep this variety in its native town. Some experts deny that `Pöstlingberg` is a variety. They claim it was just a selection of Nymphaea alba. Like this it sets lots of seed and it is extremly vigorous. So it can be used only in really large ponds.
