Muscari neglectum [Guss. ex Ten.] - Grape Hyacinth Muscari neglectum [Guss. ex Ten.] - Grape Hyacinth

This Grape Hyacinth is a classical weed of vineyards in Central Europe. It is native to the mediterranean region, but it was brought north almost 2000 years ago when wine growing was introduced. As long as the vineyards were run in the traditional way they offered excellent conditions to the Grape Hyacinth. Modern methods of vineyard cultivation however are its doom. So ...

Montia sibirica [(L.) J.T. Howell] - Candy Flower Montia sibirica [(L.) J.T. Howell] - Candy Flower
This plant comes from Siberia, but it is naturalized in the UK for several centuries. It grows in moist forests, but in the garden it will also do well on drier or wetter spots. All parts of it are edible, even the flowers. As long as winter isn`t too cold, it is possible to harvest fresh leaves from it. They can be used like purslane. It is a short lived plant but will spread by seedlings. Since it got no strong roots, the surplus of seedlings can be weeded easily. The plant is not only edible but also pretty and can be used as a ground cover even in deep shade. The flowers are usualy pink, but we grow a white flowering variety that was discovered in Scotland.

Monarda fistulosa `Rosenmelisse`- Rose Balm Monarda fistulosa `Rosenmelisse`- Rose Balm
This is a variety of Bee Balm, which is known as a cottage garden plant. Less know is the fact that the foliage can be used to prepare herbal teas. This variety here was created in Canada. Its foliage has a strong fragrance of roses. It can be used to prepare sort of rose-scent-tea, but there are many more culinary uses possible. The fragrant substance in the foliage is geraniol, that is used to prepare a substitute to true rose oil.

Lychnis chalcedonica `Mix` - Maltese Cross Lychnis chalcedonica `Mix` - Maltese Cross

The Maltese Cross is a classical plant of Cottage Gardens, although it appeared pretty late in our gardens. The first to grow it in Europe was probably Konrad Gessner, a 16th century botanist from Zürich. We do not know how he got hold of it. Perhaps he bought seed of it from Venetian merchants, who controlled trade with the Ottoman Empire at that time. The scientific name of ...

Ligularia dentata `Moorblut` - Leopardplant Ligularia dentata `Moorblut` - Leopardplant
This is a very nice selection of the leopardplant. Its foliage is darkgreen-brownish, the stalks are reddish-brown. Its bright yellow-orange flowers provide a sharp contrast to the foliage. On suitable spots (plenty of moisture and fertilizer) it will grow to the size of a man and perform as an impressiv solitary perennial.

Lathyrus latifolius - Perennial Sweet Pea Mix Lathyrus latifolius - Perennial Sweet Pea Mix
Some years ago we bought seed of Lathyrus latifolius `Red Pearl`. As soon as the first seedlings were in bloom it became obvious that the seed had been mislabeled. There were a few plants with red flowers, but the majority showed shades from palest pink to magenta. It turned out to be a mixture of perennial sweet peas, and so we offer it here. Perennial sweet peas come from Southern Europe, but they are perfectly hardy in Central Europe. They look like their annual relatives, but they are not fragrant. Every spring they reliably re-emerge from their root stocks.

Iris ensata var spontanea [(Makino) Nakai] - Japanese Iris Iris ensata var spontanea [(Makino) Nakai] - Japanese Iris
Good things come to those who wait. After many years we finaly were able to add a Japanese Iris to our collection that is no hybrid but one of the three wild varieties. Seed of our stock plants was collected in the wild in Japan in 2007. There it grows in moist to wet meadows, but in the garden it is satisfied when it is well watered. Especially in spring it needs lots of water for a rapid growth and abundant bloom.

Inula helenium [L.] - True Elecampane Inula helenium [L.] - True Elecampane
In Central Europe true elecampane is grown in fields for the pharmaceutical trade. It is the rhizome that contains the desired substances, that are sold as `Helenii Rhizoma`. In the garden it does best in slightly moist soil in full sun or partial shade. It is often said that its botanical name refers to Helen of Troy, of whos tears the plant grew according to ancient legend, but the name can be translate also simply as `Greek-Elecampane`. An especially nice name it received in medieval England: Elfwort.
